11th Annual Barleywine Bacchanal Starts Saturday

It doesn’t seem too terribly threatening, this simple tray of six small beer samples. I carefully navigate the crowd, carrying it back to the table with anxious care, as if the little snifters contained nitroglycerine and not beer. I set the tray down gently without wasting the tiniest drop.

Candles sit in dimpled mugs on the table. The candlelight illuminates the beer. Some of them are dark brown and some are deep ruby red. Others appear even less menacing, glowing a mellow shade of pale gold. It is a beautiful, artistic array of deliciousness. Nope, nothing about this tray of beer looks too terribly intimidating. But I know better. I must proceed with great caution. I have crawled away from this event more times than I’d care to admit.

I’m talking about the annual Barleywine Bacchanal at the Beveridge Place Pub (blog sponsor). This year, the event runs from Saturday, February 23 through Saturday March 2. This event celebrates the beauty of Barleywine–their rich, luxurious, and complicated decadence. Beautiful, yes, but their inebriant qualities cannot be ignored. This is the 11th year in a row that the Beveridge Place Pub has assembled an impressive list of Barleywines from near and far. In all, they will tap into 30 different Barleywines.

You can order a regular size glass, but taster trays are encouraged to maximize your tasting pleasure. Designated drivers are also encouraged to maximize your safety. This is no place for children. Good thing the Beveridge Place Pub is on a major bus route. The RapidRide C line (and other buses) stop right outside the door.

For more information about Barleywine, pick up the current issue of Sip Northwest magazine, which has a nice article about this bodacious beverage. You may even find a few copies laying around the Beveridge Place Pub.

Here is the current list of beers. Keep an eye on the Beveridge Place Pub’s Facebook page to learn about additions and special announcements, like rare vertical offerings.
