14 Washingto IPAs set to compete in NIPAC

Each year the Brewing News put on the National IPA Championship (NIPAC) — a series of head-to-head match-ups, arranged tournament-style, to determine the nation’s “best” IPA. Click here to see our previous posts about NIPAC, including results from last year’s tournament.

This year the first round will take place on February 14th. The final round will take place on March 20th. For complete details about the match ups, and to fill out your bracket, visit the official NIPAC Web site.

Last year, Washington only had 3 horses in the race. Pike IPA and Redhook Long Hammer IPA failed to make it out of first round. After an impressive victory over Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA, Boundary Bay IPA suffered a difficult loss to Deschutes Inversion IPA in round three.

This year the field has been expanded to include 128 contestant. There are 14 entrants from the state of Washington.

  1. I have Diamond Knot taking the championship. Breakaway beats out Boundary but loses to DK.

  2. 13 IPA’s in the challenge from WA is great.. hopefully some make it to the final rounds. Love Super Goose & Boundary Bay, and what about Walking Man ? there IPA’s are superb.

  3. I will be judging the first round in near Syracuse NY this Sunday ( after judging Barley Wine at the Coles Barley Wine festival on Saturday in Buffalo). I don’t know if I’ll get any Washington IPA’s in my flight, – certainly not Pike – but I wish all WA brewers luck.
Interesting that that they limit the IPA’s to 7.5% – which is why we didn’t send our 8% double IPA – I wonder how many of the competition IPA are creeping up on 8%.
I gotta say – judging IPA is certainly a treat . . one I’m really looking forward to.
Drew Cluley – Head Brewer @ Pike
