Airways Introduces Loud Lady Imperial IPA – A Beer as Big as Her Mouth

Update: 6/13/13 – original post is below. I drank a bottle last night. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a 200 IBU beer, knowing that a normal human palate can’t recognize anything over about 75 or 100 IBU (or so they say) and that there’s no real gauge for measuring hop bitterness beyond 100 IBU (or so they say). I’m a now a believer in things unseen! Praise be!

The Loud Lady has a big proboscis. The hops jump out of the glass and punch you in the schnoz! This beer is deliciously hoppy. Not overly sweet like many other Imperial IPAs, but rather dry for an Imperial IPA. Hop lovers will struggle to find enough superlatives. I would recommend that any serious hop head go find a bottle or a pint of Loud Lady. I think people might freak out over this one, as if it were an oft-ballyhooed beer from another state.

Currently on tap at the Airways Brewing tasting room (at the brewery) and officially debuting on Friday night at the Washington Brewers Festival. Coming soon in bottles to a fine beer retailer near you, assuming you’re in the greater Seattle-Tacoma area. You can also order it online direct from Airways Brewing.

Airways Brewing Company (blog sponsor) announced today the arrival of a new beer: Loud Lady Imperial IPA, a seasonal, limited-release beer. The name is an homage to that impossibly loud woman who always seems to be in the row behind you when you’re stuck on a five-hour transcontinental flight. Maybe she’s nervous about flying or maybe she’s had too much to drink. Either way, it’s hard not to be bitter when she’s blathering in your ear incessantly.

This beer is brewed with 52 pounds of hops (Cascade, Centennial, and Simcoe) in each 10-barrel batch. Reportedly, it clocks in at 200 IBUs. In other words, it’s a beer as big as her mouth and just as bitter as you are.

Not mentioned in the press release below, but of interest to local beer drinkers, Loud Lady Imperial IPA beer will debut on Friday night at the Washington Brewer’s Festival, where Airways’ Brewmaster Alex Dittmar will be onsite to pour it. That is the only time it will be available on tap away from the company’s tasting room and bistro. Bottles will be more widely available. In fact, bottles will be available through the Airways Brewing online store starting Friday for people who are not in the local area.

Here’s the press release:

Airways Brewing Company Introduces Loud Lady Imperial IPA™

“When it’s been a long flight…”

Kent-based microbrewery releases limited-edition Northwest-style

Imperial IPA in 22-ounce bottles and on draft.

KENT, Wash. (June 12, 2013) – Say hello to Loud Lady Imperial IPA™, a new, limited-edition beer from the Kent-based brewery’s expanding line of delicious handcrafted beers. With a special run just in time for summer festivals, this delicious, Northwest-style IPA will be released in small batches only once a year.

“We’ve been planning to brew a true, Imperial IPA for a while – one that was very different from our flagship Sky Hag IPA®,” said Alex Dittmar, owner and head brewer at Airways Brewing Company. “We added tons of citrusy Northwest hops to this beer. It’s a big, tasty, aromatic IPA, but not so over-the-top that you can’t have a full pint.”

Loud Lady IPA is brewed with more than 52 pounds of Cascade, Centennial, and Simcoe hops added to each 10-barrel batch, giving it more than 200 IBUs. Deep gold in color with a strong hop aroma, Loud Lady is a big beer, but also an easy-drinking one.

Beginning Friday, June 14, Loud Lady Imperial IPA will be available in 22-ounce bottles at both Airways locations for $7.50. Bottles will be available starting June 17 at select specialty bottle shops throughout the Seattle and Tacoma area. The beer will also be available on draft at both the Airways Brewing Tap Room in the Kent industrial area and the Airways Beer & Bistro in Downtown Kent on June 14.

Dittmar says for the label artwork, Airways once again turned to artist Brett Nilsson to do a custom illustration. “Brett is an enormously talented illustrator and was the mastermind behind the look of our popular Sky Hag character. We think he’s done an equally impressive job creating the Loud Lady.”

In addition to Loud Lady IPA, craft beer enthusiasts can pick up the brewery’s flagship Sky Hag IPA and Chocolate Stout in 22-ounce bottles. Pre Flight Pilsner and Oatmeal PSA (Pale Session Ale) are available in 16-oz cans. Pints, tasters and growlers of all of these beers and more can also be found at the Airways Brewing Tap Room or Airways Brewing Beer & Bistro in historic downtown Kent.
