Beer in the Great Outdoors: Smarty Pants

This is the first in a series of posts about our favorite places to drink beer outside. In this series, I will discuss options for drinking beer al fresco in the Seattle area. Some of these places will be obvious and well known. Others will be obscure and unexpected. We are not talking about your backyard or your porch. We’re talking about Seattle-area pubs, restaurants, and breweries with decent beer and outdoor seating options.

SMARTY PANTS (Georgetown)

Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood is a great place to drink beer. You have several options. One of them is Smarty Pants. Today I want to tell you about Smarty Pants as an outdoor beer-drinking destination.

The Scene: This is a 21+ establishment. Smarty Pants is a biker bar in the hippest sense of the word. Out front, expect to see a blend of Harley Davidsons, Ducatis, Vespa scooters, and vintage Hondas. On the televisions, expect to see motorcycle racing, often from Europe. There is a motorcycle theme at Smarty Pants, but the rest of us are very welcome too. Along with beer and cocktails, they also serve food, including brunch on the weekends. Unless you are wearing your pajamas, you cannot possibly under-dress for this casual, Georgetown bar.

The Beer: Recently at Smarty Pants, I enjoyed a Breakaway IPA from American Brewing Company. The list of six taps rotates, but always seems to include Manny’s Pale Ale and Pabst Blue Ribbon (this is Georgetown, after all). Odin Brewing’s Kolsch and Snoqualmie Falls Grand Cru rounded out the draft selection. Also, a local cider on tap. It’s not the most amazing tap list I’ve seen, but I have always been satisfied. They take some pride in the tap list, limited though it may be.

The Patio: The outdoor seating area probably has room for about 50 or 60 people. I have never experienced any problem getting a table. If you happen to get chilly, there is a propane heater. If you’re lucky, they’ll light the fire pit.

Tips: They make big, bad-ass sammies at Smarty Pants. Consider sharing one with someone unless you’re really hungry. My favorite is the Miss Piggy: roasted pork, grilled onions, jack cheese and slaw, served on a french roll.

Wednesday is Bike Night at Smarty Pants, featuring motorcycle racing on the big screen and a lively crowd of local motorcycle fans of all types.

Straight Poop: (This is where we will mention any drawbacks.) The only drawback for this Seattle beer patio would be the proximity to the freeway. It cannot be denied that you are practically right under the I-5 onramp. The good news, you’re so much underneath it that you don’t really hear the cars. Still, it is not exactly peaceful and serene., especially since it’s under the Boeing Field flight path. This is Georgetown and not Mount Rainier National Park, after all.

If you have a suggestion, shoot us an email. We’d love an excuse to explore a new beer garden.
