Beer Junction reopens in new, improved location

West Seattle’s bottle shop, The Beer Junction, reopens tomorrow in their new, larger location on California Avenue. We originally told you about the move last month, but the address isn’t the only change. They also added a bar with beer by the pint as well as the growler. The change means they are now a 21+ establishment, but it also allows their customers to try the beer before they fill a growler.

The new Beer Junction space at 4511 California Avenue SW in West Seattle used to house a state liquor store. The shop is much larger than their previous store, spanning the building from the California Avenue frontage to the back alley, with a sizable public parking lot behind.

Plenty of bottles to choose from

Up front at the bar, the space is sunlit with several tables providing a place to sit down and enjoy a pint or bottle (with a corkage fee). Eight taps are hand selected, including India Pelican Ale from Oregon, the first time that beer has poured in Washington State, according to owner Morgan Herzog. Two high-tech growler filling stations let you take the draft beer home to enjoy later. There are also two house wines available by the glass.

High-tech (Star Trek-looking) growler filling station

Walking back towards the alley you’re flanked by coolers full of beer – far more beer than they had room to stock in the old location. The old front-load coolers seem insignificant compared to the new rear-load coolers accessed by a walk-in refrigerator – with room for a full case of each kind of beer. So much beer that Morgan wisely offers small shopping carts, tempting you to purchase more than you can carry.

In addition to beer, shoppers will find a nice selection of hard cider, mead and wine.

Tonight was a soft opening. Tomorrow, Thursday, March 29th, is the first regular day open with hours 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Morgan says he might plan a bit of a grand opening celebration in April. The popular Thursday beer tastings will commence next week, likely with a format similar to the former space (but with a lot more elbow room).
