A very special beer, brewed to benefit a very special cause
Just over one year ago, Officer Diego Moreno was killed during a high-speed pursuit in Kent. It was a horribly sad, unfortunate set of circumstances that led to the accident that ended Moreno’s life. A special beer release party at Airways Brewing in Kent will help fund the scholarship set up in his memory.
Friends of Officer Moreno wanted to create a beer in his honor, so they reached out to Kent’s own Airways Brewing. This Friday, August 2nd the brewery releases 2K56 IPA, a beer to honor the fallen officer. A party that day at the brewery and taproom (4:00 until 8:00) will raise funds for the Diego Moreno Memorial Scholarship at Washington State University. This is a 21+ event (state liquor laws).

The beer gets its name from a call sign frequently used by Officer Moreno. It was brewed in collaboration with, among others, Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla and Sargent Jason Bishop (pictured above). 2K56 IPA is described as a Northwest-style IPA brewed with Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops.

Friday’s release party will raise money to help complete funding for the scholarship set up by Officer Moreno’s family. The scholarship will be available annually for a senior that is a certified major in criminal justice.
A portion of the sales from the entire batch of beer will benefit the scholarship. Also, the brewery will hold a target raffle for a number of items, including things like a four-hour police ride-along experience; cupcakes from Sweet Themes Bakery; restaurant gift cards; and beer-, wine-, and charcuterie-themed gift baskets. Guests do not need to be present during the drawing to win, and 100 percent of the raffle proceeds will go directly to the scholarship. They are still seeking gift cards, baskets, or one-of-a-kind handmade items for the raffle. Interested parties can email info@airwaysbrewing.com.
Furthermore, they will set up a taco bar (smoked carne asada tacos). For $10 guests can fill up a plate knowing that 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the scholarship.
