Beers and the Beautiful Game: Street Soccer with Beer

This one is from the Only in Seattle files. Naked City Brewery and The Yard Cafe are teaming up with Golazo Energy Drink to present a street soccer tournament: Beers and the Beautiful Game. The event takes place on Friday, August 10th on Greenwood Avenue in front of Naked City Brewery and Taphouse. The event runs from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Spectators (and maybe even participants) are encouraged to enjoy delicious beers at Naked City and The Yard before, during and after the games.

We’re Seattle. We love beer and we love soccer. Perfect.

A dozen teams will compete in a 3-on-3 format, playing 20-minute games. Teams are divided into two divisions: fun and pro. Former Seattle Sounders player Santa Maria Rivera will serve as a referee. A few other former Sounders will compete in the pro division. Registration is already full. All players are of legal drinking age.

When we were kids, we used to play in the streets like this. Inevitably, just as you were about to break away and score an amazing goal, someone would shout, “CAR!” and play would stop for traffic. Players in the Beers and the Beautiful Game tournament will not have to worry about that. The street will be shut down as part of the annual PhinneyWood Summer Streets event.

When: Friday, August 10, 6-10pm

Where: Greenwood Avenue in front of Naked City Brewery & Taphouse

Seattle, WA – Naked City Brewery & Taphouse, The Yard Café, and natural energy drink Golazo have teamed up to host the first ever Greenwood Street Soccer Tournament on Greenwood Avenue during PhinneyWood Summer Streets on August 10th. Registration for the 16-team tournament filled up rapidly, with 92 players (all 21 and over) competing in two divisions—Fun and Pro—in a 3-on-3 format with 20-minute games. Former Seattle Sounders player and Golazo spokesperson Santa Maria Rivera will serve as a celebrity referee. Hollow Earth Radio’s DJ Dave Newman will spin records live on Greenwood Avenue during the games. And of course, every player’s registration includes two complimentary beers.

“Seattle is one of the greatest soccer cities in the world,” said Naked City’s General Manager, and tournament creator, Bryan Miller. “It was only a matter of time before we had our own major street soccer tournament. The response has been incredible. The City of Seattle has been amazingly helpful with logistics, and The Yard and Golazo are great partners. ”

Teams in both divisions are sponsored by local businesses and soccer enthusiasts, from Two Beers Brewing and Elysian Brewing to Brooks Running and 95 Slide Sports Bar. The Fun Division will compete for the Betsy’s Mountain Cup while the Pro Division battles for the Cowboy Crown.

“This tournament is all about fun,” Miller continues, “but with a few former Sounders playing in the Pro Division, there will certainly be some skill on show. And of course we’ll have some great beers on tap at Naked City and The Yard before, during, and after the games. This will be a great night for anybody who loves beer and the beautiful game.”
