A Big Week in Seattle for Fans of Big Beers

Another action-packed Thursday looms on the horizon. Beyond that, it’s a big beery weekend in Seattle. This Thursday there are at least four special beer events you should consider: The 6th Annual Big Wood Festival kickoff at Brouwer’s Cafe, NW Winter Beer Taste at Ivar’s Acres of Clams, Black Diamond Brewers Night at Beveridge Place Pub (blog sponsor), and Sno Cru Release Party at Engine House 9 in Tacoma. And then Friday marks the kickoff of Washington Winter Beer Fest – the official celebration of Washington’s winter beers. If there’s more happening around town, leave a comment and tell us about it.

Brouwer’s Cafe Big Wood Festival Kicks Off

The preliminary list of beers is amazing enough, but more will be added before the doors open this Thursday for the Big Wood Festival at Brouwer’s Cafe. This is one of the city’s most-anticipated beer events, especially for those who love big, bold, barrel-aged beers. There are already dozens of rare (and in some cases exclusive) beers on the list and additional tasty, woody brews are on the way. Follow the Brouwer’s blog as more beers are added.

Inclement weather be damned, expect a line to start forming outside the door a couple of hours before the 11:00 a.m. opening. The event actually runs all weekend, but ardent beer zealots will not want to miss any special treats that might expire before the first day’s festivities end. If you like the big, barrel-aged brews, you do not need me to extol the virtues of BigWood.

Win Ticket to Ivar’s Northwest Winter Beer Tasting

Interested in something not quite so big, at least in terms of the beer? Consider getting tickets for the Northwest Winter Beer Tasting at Ivar’s Acres of Clams. Today (Monday, December 3) at 1:00 p.m. we will announce the winner of our ticket giveaway. You may still have a little time to enter. Click here.  The Washington Beer Blog is a big advocate of pairing fine food with craft beer. Around Seattle, both Ivar’s and craft beer are traditions. This event combines some of the Northwest’s best winter brews with food devised by Ivar’s executive chef Chris Garr.

Shane Johns, the Head Brewer at Tacoma’s Engine House 9, informed us of a very special event: the Sno Cru Release Party. In addition to celebrating the release of Sno Cru (Engine House 9’s winter barrel blend) the event will feature some outstanding beers. Among them, three different versions of Engine House 9’s Belgian Dark Strong Ale: pinot, cabernet, and Bourbon barrel-aged versions of the same beer. Also, a blended version.

Other offerings include the Barrel 1 batch 3 (American Sour Ale), Hard Day’s Work (bourbon barrel-aged Saison with Brett), Funky Farmer Ralph (Brett Saison), barrel-aged English Barley Wine, porter aged in merlot barrel, Imperial Stout, Double Dry Hop IPA, Farmer Ralph, nitro Irish Stout, and our standards Belgian White, Rowdy & Dick amber, Fire Engine Red, Tacoma Brew and IPA. They will have three E9 Casks that night: 09 Barley wine, Winter spice (spiced Belgian inspired ale) and Dry Hop Red. And then there is the guest beers: Schooner Exact Kriek, Duo Brewing Bourbon Barrel Milk Stout, Rodenbach Grand Cru, and a special beer from Boneyard Brewing. Plus, a bunch of fun bottles like Hair of the Dog 2011 Doggie Claws, Lost Abbey Deliverance, and others

Follow Engine House 9 on Facebook to learn more.

Black Diamond at the Beveridge Place

Black Diamond Brewing is not a brewery in Black Diamond, WA. Instead, Black Diamond is an award-wining brewpub in Walnut Creek, California. Join the Beveridge Place Pub (blog sponsor) as they welcome Black Diamond Brewing for a brewers night celebration. The selection of great beers will include a brandy barrel-aged Belgian-style Quad, a bourbon barell-aged Winter Grand Cru ’11, Fracas Imperial Red, and more.

Washington Winter Beer Festival
