Last weekend the Anchorage Convention Center hosted the 19th Annual Great Alaska Beer and Barleywine Festival. In addition to a lot of great beers of all types, the event focuses on Barleywine. Some 75 breweries participated, mostly from the western United States. In all, about 400 different beers were poured. The most important thing to know about the Great Alaska is that it is a “Sanctioned Best Barley Wine Competition,” featuring some of the best Barleywines from all the land. The competition is fierce. Bringing home a medal, even once, from this event is an impressive feat.
For the third year in a row Black Raven Brewing has returned from Alaska with some hardware. In 2011 and 2012, Black Raven Old Birdbrain Barleywine brought home the gold. This year, Old Birdbrain placed third. Congratulations to Beaux Bowman and his talented, creative brew crew for this amazing series of victories. Three years in a row!
Information about this festival is not easy to find. Fire up the Googlewebs and you’ll see what I mean. Here’s what we know for sure. Anchorage Brewing’s Cognac BA Barleywine won first place, Firestone Walker’s Sucaba won second place, and Black Raven’s Old Birdbrain won third. At least three Washington breweries participated: 7 Seas Brewing, Two Beers Brewing, and Black Raven Brewing. There may have been others, we just don’t know.
