Bron Yr Aur Brewing Announces the Taproom’s Opening

Back in October we visited Yakima for the annual Fresh Hop Ale Festival, which is an event we highly recommend to anyone, not just hop lovers. While in Yakima for a relaxing, fun-filled weekend, we took a drive a few miles up Highway 12 to the small town of Naches to visit a renowned pizza place that was about to open a brewery. We just learned that Bron Yr Aur Brewing is now producing and serving beer, with plans to open the taproom on New Years Day.

The easiest way to describe it, Bron Yr Aur Brewing is a pizza place, located in Naches along Highway 12, with a brewery and tasting room out back. The pizza place is not exactly new, occupying what was once a roadside produce store, but the brewery is brand spanking new. They constructed a new building around back for the brewery and tasting room. It’s no small affair, a 10-barrel brewhouse.

The official taproom opening is scheduled for January 1st but you can get the beer right now to accompany your pizza. As I understand it, they’re pouring a Cream Ale and a Stout. They’ll add two more beers to the lineup soon: an IPA and an IRA.

Coming VERY soon!

Although we didn’t get to sample any of the new brewery’s beer when we visited, we did get to eat some great pizza. (I should note, they had an outstanding tap list.) Thin and crispy crust, featuring creative, uncommon toppings, like chicken pesto and pulled pork. I’m sure they’d do a regular pepperoni pizza for you, but we really enjoyed the taco pizza. If Bron Yr Aur Brewing’s beer is as good as the pizza, then this brewery is sure to be a hit.

What’s With the Funny Name?

The Internet tells me that it’s pronounced “Bron Rar,” but my Welsh blood tells me it’s closer to “BronaYar.”

It seems someone is a Led Zeppelin fan. (Who isn’t, right?) Bron Yr Aur is a privately owned 18th-century cottage, on the outskirts of Machynlleth, Wales. It’s best known as the place where Jimmy Page and Robert Plant spent a fair bit of time tucked away on retreat and wrote some seriously great music, including most of the stuff on Led Zeppelin III, like Immigrant Song, Bron Yr Aur Stomp, Gallows Pole, and Tangerine. Bron Yr Aur is also where they wrote Stairway to Heaven, which appeared on the band’s next album.

Translated directly, Bron Yr Aur means “breast of gold.” By extension, it means “golden hills.” It’s a Welsh thing.

Classic rock history lesson aside, the name is fitting for this brewery. Bron Yr Aur is a remote and beautiful place in the south part of Snowdonia, Wales. Naches is a remote and beautiful place near Yakima, Washington.
