Cinco de Mayo happenings for beer-lovers

Today is Cinco de Mayo. There is some historic significance to this day, especially for Mexican-Americans and Mexican nationals, but in the USA Cinco de Mayo is pretty much just a day designated for drinking. Who am I to argue with tradition?

All joking aside, and looking for a bright side, I think it’s kind of neat that we have a day dedicated to celebrating our neighbors to the south. Sure, it is a bit odd the way we do it, and it is a holiday largely unrecognized in Mexico, but Cinco de Mayo provides an opportunity for all of us Americans to be just a little bit Mexican. It is a day to celebrate all of the great things that Mexican culture contributes to our overall sense of Americana. I mean that quite seriously and sincerely, but if I had a silly sombrero I’d probably wear it tonight.
