The first weekend of summer – local beer scene happenings

Wondering what to do on this first weekend of summer? I have a few ideas for you. Some of them very beery, some of them just kind of beery. Whatever you choose to do, be safe. And when I say that, of course I mean that you should use sunscreen. Consider wearing a broad-brimmed hat. Stay hydrated. When it comes to weather, I’m an optimist.

Friday, 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. – To celebrate (or mourn) the fact that we are already halfway to next Christmas, Columbia City Alehouse will tap into two Christmas kegs lovingly stored from last Christmas–one keg of Pike Auld Acquaintance and one keg of Snoqualmie Avalanche Ale. These kegs have been properly stored and aged.

Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. – The Greenwood Car Show. This is probably the best hot rod and classic car show in the greater Seattle area. Even if you are not a car buff, this will blow your mind. Lined up along Greenwood Avenue from 67th Street to 90th Street, they are expecting as many as 1,000 cars. That’s 23 blocks of vintage, souped-up, tricked-out, beautiful and bad-ass automobiles. They’re will even be a vintage hydroplane on display. And since you’re in Greenwood, perhaps you’ll stop by Naked City Brewery to see what the Dons have on tap and then head across the street to Pillagers Pub to sample fine beers from Baron Brewing and Three Skulls Ales. Why wouldn’t you?

Saturday, 2:00 – 10:00 p.m. Georgetown Artopia, a celebration of culture, art, music, performance and film. The streets of Georgetown will be brimming with excitement and fun. There will be multiple stages and two beer gardens. Exactly what will be poured in the beer gardens, we cannot say. For sure, you will find Georgetown Brewing beer in the beer gardens. Duh. It wouldn’t be much of a Georgetown festival if Georgetown Brewing was not involved. Which, if any, of our other local brews will be on tap, we don’t know. Leave a comment if you do.

Saturday, 12:00 – 10:00 p.m. Stevenson Brews, Blues and BBQs Festival – Feeling adventerous this weekend? Head down to Stevenson (home of Walking Man Brewing) for a party on the river. Enjoy plenty of great blues music lovingly paired with tasty craft beer. The event is operated by the City of Stevenson. Participating breweries include Amnesia, Big Al, Big Horse, Double Mountain, Elysian, Full Sail, Ice Harbor, Laht Neppur, Laurelwood, Lazy Boy, New Old Lompoc, Roots, Salmon Creek, Skagit River, Snipes Mountain, Spire Cider, and Walking Man.

Saturday, 4:00 – 10:00 p.m. Port Townsend Brewing Company Birthday Bash. Head out to Port Townsend and party in one of our favorite beer gardens. To celebrate their 13th birthday, Port Townsend Brewing will have 13 beers on tap, plus live music, door prizes and tacos. While the thought of going to Port Townsend and not getting to hit the Water Street Brewery and Pub makes me a bit verklempt, maybe it will help to temper the grief. Sad that Water Street is gone, but glorious that Port Townsend Brewing is not.

Saturday, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The first in the summertime outdoor music and barbecue series at Fiddler’s Inn. Schooner Exact provides the beer and the barbecue expertise. Live music outside. A great way to enjoy a summer evening. It’s kind of like a brewers night with music and food.
