Five new Washington breweries make the list

We have just added five new breweries to our list of Washington Breweries and Brew Pubs. This brings the total to 135 active, licensed microbreweries in Washington. The five latest additions are listed below.

Lantern Brewing in Seattle
North Sound Brewing in Mount Vernon
Northwest Peaks Brewery in Seattle
Vital Brewing in Everett
White Bluffs Brewing in Richland

Some notes about our list

Our list of Washington breweries is cross-checked against the Washington Liquor Control Board’s list of licensed microbreweries.

As we’ve discussed in previous posts, there are a number of licenses pending.

We have removed two breweries from the list because we know that they are not currently active. For instance, Gilligan’s Brewing (which halted operations some time ago) apparently still holds a license. Another example is the Ale House Pub and Eatery in Tacoma (University Park). According to the state they are licensed but as far as I can tell they do not brew beer.

Our list includes an increasing number of nano-breweries, some of which operate out of private homes. As far as the state’s list of licensed microbreweries is concerned, there is no difference between a half-barrel nano-brewery and Redhook. It’s a matter of public record, but I still feel a bit weird about publishing those addresses. (I will be happy to remove any address if asked.)

There are some other discrepancies between our list and the state’s list that we need not discuss here.

So how many breweries do we have in Washington? As crazy as it sounds, if you study the list, I suppose you could say it’s a matter of opinion. We have 135 on our list, so that’s the number I’m sticking with. For now.
