Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery – Grand Opening August 15

It seems like years since we first told you about the plan to open Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery, the first cooperatively owned brewery in Washington. That’s because it has been years. We first reported on the plan back in 2011. But the wait is finally over.

The brewery’s 1,500+ member-owners invite you to the grand opening celebration on Saturday, August 15th at the new brewery and taproom in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood.

Details about the event can be found in the press release below. Keep an eye on the Flying Bike Facebook page for more information. See our complete archive of stories about Flying Bike here, dating back to April 2011.

Since 2011, Flying Bike has built a community of over 1,500 beer and co-op enthusiasts with the goal of building Washington’s first cooperatively owned brewery. The Co-op’s Member Driven Beer program allows member-owners to submit and vote for the beers that are brewed and served in the tasting room. One of the beers created from this program, Dan Schmidt’s Bike Rye’d Saison, was selected to appear at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) later this year.

In May, Flying Bike signed on Kevin Forhan as Head Brewer. Kevin was most recently Regional Brewer for RAM Restaurant & Breweries and has also held positions at Elysian Fields, Big Time and Pike. “Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery is clearly something special. Many people have worked long and hard, essentially as volunteers, to make it happen” says Forhan. “I’m honored, excited, a little nervous, and very hopeful that Flying Bike has a future as unique and promising as its beginnings.”
