Great Pumpkin Beer Fest 2012 – New Brews and Other News

It has become one of the most popular beer events of the season, if not the entire year. The Great Pumpkin Beer Festival, on October 19 and 20, features 60 of the most interesting, creative and intensely seasonal beers imaginable. This is the 8th year that Elysian Brewing Company has organized and hosted the GPBF. You may have already heard about the event itself, but we have some new stuff to tell you about – new stuff that we learned last night.

Perhaps the most important thing for you to know is that you MUST purchase tickets in advance. There will be three sessions: Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday night. Determine which session works best for you and order your tickets now. A sellout is likely. Get tickets at any of Elysian’s three pubs or online at Brown Paper Tickets.

Of the 60 beers poured at this year’s GPBF, Elysian Brewing brewed a whopping 13 of them. The event also features beers from breweries far and near, including offerings from other Washington breweries as well as breweries from across the United States. There will even be a beer from Norway’s Nøgne Ø Brewery.

Last night we attended the Mini PumpkinFest at Beveridge Place Pub (blog sponsor). They were serving a sampler tray with a selection of six Pumpkin Beers from Elysian. We caught up with Dick Cantwell, the Brewmaster at Elysian, and asked about some of his new creations:

A not-yet-unnamed Pumpkin Porter inspired by a traveling hippie fest. That’s all we know.

Tomme Arthur (The Lost Abbey brewery) was in town recently to produce a collaborative pumpkin beer with Elysian. Described as a something close to a Pumpkin Steam Beer or a Pumpkin Bière de Garde, the beer may or may not be spiced.

The folks from Beau’s All Natural Ales (Ontario, Canada) also came to Seattle to create a collaborative beer with Elysian. Actually, it’s a Gruet, which some people don’t really think of as beer because it contains no hops. A pumpkin Gruet? Sure, why  not.

A Pumpkin Barleywine named The Gourdfather. Described as a big beer with lots of pumpkin.

A Pumpkin Curry Beer named Mulligatawny Moon. Mulligatawny is a spicy curry stew. Mulligatawny Moon is a pumpkin beer brewed with many of the spices used in Mulligatawny.

Here are the event details:
