The Grouch, where he should be: in a can

In 2010 Northern Ales moved 30 miles south from Northport to Kettle Falls, making it a very remote brewery but no longer deserving the title Washington’s Most Remote Brewery. See our stories in the archive. Admittedly, I haven’t shared any news from Northern Ales since the big move. Today, that changes.

I just received news from Steve Hedrick, the owner of Northern Ales. The brewery recently released its first-ever canned beer: the Grouch Lager. Each year the people of Kettle Falls elect a Town Grouch. The reigning Grouch is Dan Aldous, who has now been immortalized on a can of beer.

BTW: I think the new Most Remote Brewery in Washington is Republic Brewing in Republic, Washington, though I’m willing to entertain other suggestions.

Here’s the story from Steve:

Oscar isn’t the only Grouch in a can anymore! From Kettle Falls, Washington, Northern Ales has released the Grouch Lager as their first-ever canned beer. With a label that immortalizes the face of the 2014 Kettle Falls elected grouch, Dan Aldous, with artwork by Brad Walker, the Grouch Lager makes it’s appearance on store shelves December 11th.

Owner/brewer Steve Hedrick and his crew processed over 400 cases with the assistance of a Spokes mobile canning unit out of Spokane. One of the first local brewers to venture into the relatively uncommon practice of canning a microbrew, Northern Ales sees this as a trial step for future canning adventures. Catering to the active outdoor lifestyle of the northeastern corner of the state, canned beer is more packable than the glass counterparts usually offered.

One of their most popular beers, the Grouch Lager, Northern Ales describes the beer as a “light lager, crisp, refreshing, very light hop flavor and aroma.” Contrary to its moniker, the Grouch is a friendly, drinkable beer with enough personality to establish itself as a favorite. Look for it anywhere beer is sold in the Stevens/Ferry/Pend Oreille counties now.

For the town Grouch, the celebrity status of appearing on a beer can label is enough to make him consider running again. Hedrick and the crew at Northern Ales would like to see this become an annual tradition, with a new label for every elected grouch.

  1. It’s truly very complicated in this full of activity life to listen news on Television, therefore I simply use internet for that
reason, and obtain the latest information.
