Happening this weekend on the WA beer scene

There is a lot going on this weekend on the Washington Beer Scene. If I’m missing something, and I probably am, share what you know by leaving a comment.

Brouwer’s 9th Annual Hard Liver Barleywine Festival

This is perhaps the most aptly named beer festivals of them all. Hard Liver is no place for children. Pansy-assed wussies need not apply.

On Saturday, March 12th at 11:00 a.m. when the doors open, there will be a line outside of Brouwer’s Cafe. There will be a lot of people in that line. I guarantee it. Rain or shine. These people are not waiting for brunch; they’re waiting for barleywine. Don’t misunderstand me, I understand the attraction and I sport a keen appreciation of high gravity libations, but don’t these people have any self-respect? I bet their mothers don’t know what they’re doing. Barleywine for breakfast?

Gird thy liver, indeed. The beer roster is impressive. We have included the complete lineup at the end of this post. The event runs through the 16th. http://www.hardliver.com/

Bellingham’s 2nd Annual St Patrick’s Day Parade (and the after-party at Boundary Bay Brewery and Bistro). Saturday, March 12th. The after-party starts at 12:30. So we’re assuming the parade starts at noonish. More info at http://www.bbaybrewery.com/news.php.

Bellingham is either a really big small town or a really small big city. I’m not sure which description better describes the “city by the bay.” Last year when we attended Bellingham’s 1st Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade we witnessed Bellingham at it’s smallest. The parade was incurably cute. The video below should give you an idea. The party in the beer garden at Boundary Bay Brewing, where the parade route just happens to end, was awesome. We’ll be there again this year.

Likely, we’ll pull ourselves away from Boundary Bay to visit Chuckanut Brewery and Kitchen, where Irish dancers and corned beef will be the order of the day. They’ll also be serving green Kolsch. Loves me some Bellingham!

ExBEERience Beer Festival
The ExBEERience Beer Festival takes place in Woodinville at the Redhook Ale Brewery on Saturday, March 12th. It sure sounds like fun for those of you lucky enough to have tickets. The Cascade Brewers Guild organizes and hosts this pro-am beer fest. Along with homebrew, the event feaures beer from more than a dozen local, pro breweries. I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that the event is sold out. The good news is that the event is sold out. ExBEERience is a charity fundraiser for Childhaven, so we are happy to report that the event sold out in advance. Those of you lucky enough to score tickets should have a good time.

Pint of Gold at Jillian’s
This Saturday, March 12th, Jillian’s Billiards in Seattle is hosting this St. Patrick’s Day prefunction. Sample delicious, newly released beers from Big Al Brewing, Odin Brewing, Georgetown Brewing, Emerald City Beer Company, and Two Beers Brewing. For $5 a ticket, you will receive six samples of beer, entry into the raffle, and one dollar of each ticket will be donated to the Deion Branch/Colin Cole Foundations. The Sean Radford Trio will be performing from 7:00-10:00 p.m. and all beers will be available on tap for $5 a pint. The event gets underway at 7:00 p.m.

Congrats to Airways Brewing Company
Happy Birthday, Airways Brewing! Saturday, March 12th marks the first anniversary for the Kent-based brewery. We asked Alex Dittmar, owner/brewer at Airways, if he planned a big party to mark the occasion. “A small celebration,” he said. “We’ll have the big party when we open the expanded tap room next month.”

The taproom will be open from 1:00 – 8:00. There’ll be music, cake and some giveaways, but don’t expect a raging bash. If you’re in the neighborhood consider swinging by to raise a pint in celebration. Maybe you’ll even get a piece of cake out of the deal.
