Latona Pub’s Earth Day (Earth Week) Celebration Approaches

It’s become an Earth Day tradition – a week-long sustainable beer transportation event. Leading up to Earth Day, the Latona Pub (blog sponsor) invites breweries to deliver kegs using people power. That is, no automobiles. Bikes, hand trucks, repurposed wheelchairs, row boats and other people-propelled devices are all okay. The longest trek on record: a keg was delivered by bike from 7 Seas Brewing in Gig Harbor. That’s more than 50 miles. The week leading up to Earth Day (Sunday, April 21) the pub pours nothing but beers delivered sans-auto.

This year, for the third year in a row, the whole thing draws to a head on Earth Day with a party at the Latona Pub. Feet First, a local organization of walking enthusiasts and foot-power advocates, is organizing a 10 mile walk, delivering a keg of Hand Truckin’ Amber Ale from Two Beers Brewing (blog sponsor) in SoDo to the pub. You are invited to join them on this urban beer hike*. See the press release below for details.

*Thank you to our friend @UrbanBeerHiker for coming up with this term.

Volunteers from Feet First will deliver the final keg – Hand Truckin’ Amber Ale – after a 10 mile walk from Two Beers Brewery in SODO to Latona Pub in Green Lake.

Join Feet First for all or part of the Hand Truckin’ Earth Day event, or meet at the Latona Pub at 2 PM to lift a glass to the power of human power – all proceeds of the Hand Truckin’ Amber Ale keg will go to support Feet First’s work to ensure all communities in Washington are walkable.

WHAT: An Earth Day celebration featuring Hand Truckin’ Amber Ale, a special edition draft beer brewed in tribute to people powered beer transportation. Volunteers will transport the ale 10 miles on foot. The event will benefit Feet First, a non-profit organization working to ensure all communities in Washington are walkable.

Participants may choose to walk for 10 miles, 5 miles, or to skip the walk and simply enjoy the beer at Latona Pub.

WHEN: Sunday, April 21, 2013

9:30 AM: Beer Hike Team meets at Two Beers Brewery (4700 Ohio Ave S, Unit A, Seattle, WA 98134)

11:15 AM – 12:15 PM: New walkers encouraged to join the Beer Hike Team for the second half of the walk and midway lunch stop at Zeeks Pizza (Belltown, 419 Denny Way, Seattle, WA 98109).

2:00 PM: Beer Hike Team arrives at Latona Pub in Green Lake (6423 Latona Ave. NE Seattle, WA 98115) for the Feet First Toast to Earth Day. Event continues until 5:00 PM.

HOW: Sign up at http://handtruckinearthday.brownpapertickets.com/

WHY: This event benefits Feet First, Washington’s only pedestrian advocacy organization. Latona Pub and Two Beers Brewery are sponsoring this event because a more walkable community benefits their businesses and makes a healthier and safer city. The proceeds from every glass of Hand Truckin’ Amber Ale will be donated to Feet First.

WHO: Since 2001, Feet First has worked to ensure all communities in Washington are walkable. Walking is a vital transportation mode that connects communities, reduces pollution, improves heal and physical fitness, and allows people to explore their natural environment.

Please note, for safety reasons, we have to limit the number of people on the hike. Sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment!
