Mutiny Hall – Roosevelt’s New Beer & Food Destination

Last night we attended a soft opening event at Mutiny Hall, a soon-to-be-open restaurant and bar located at the corner of NE 65th Street and 12th Ave NE in Seattle’s Roosevelt neighborhood. Mutiny Hall is the third restaurant by local restaurateur Seth Howard (Collins Pub, Hudson Public House). Given Seth Howard’s appetite for good beer and good food, it is not surprising that the focus here will be on elevated pub grub and outstanding craft beer. Mutiny Hall plans to open Sunday, August 12th at 4:00.

If you are familiar with Collins Pub or Hudson Public House, you know that Seth Howard takes beer very seriously. Mutiny Hall follows suit, with no less than 20 taps pouring a carefully chosen selection of craft beers. They were still filling in a few gaps last night, but we found plenty of beers to entertain our discerning palates. For you IPA lovers, last night’s selection included three of my personal favorites: American Brewing’s Breakaway IPA, Boneyard Beer’s RPM IPA, and Fort George Brewing’s Vortex IPA.

The menu will consist of sandwiches, salads, burgers and comfortable entrees, like mac-n-cheese and “loaded” fries. We tried the loaded fries; they were out of this world–smothered decadently in a rich and creamy beer-cheese sauce and topped with bacon, scallions and roasted onion jam. We also sampled the hamburger, which really stole the show. It starts with ground beef from Ballard’s CasCioppo Brothers Meats, which is loosely ground, perfectly seasoned and mouthwatering. Add onions, aged sharp Tillamook cheddar and a house aioli, and you end up with a burger that sings as it passes your lips.

Previously, this location was home to a Jalisco Mexican Restaurant. We understand transforming the space was no easy task. They removed copious amounts of painted tile and other Mexican flare, replacing it all with dark wood and warm lighting. The room is cozy and inviting, but also boisterous and lively. Huge windows look out on the hustle-n-bustle of 65th Street. Some sidewalk seating offers you a chance to enjoy the Seattle summer.

We asked Seth about the name. First off, do not expect this to be a pirate bar. You will be disappointed. Seth explained that Mutiny Hall is an oxymoronic statement suggesting both chaos and order. Mutiny conjures thoughts of mayhem and lawlessness, while Hall conjures thoughts of civility and decorum. He also points out that he has a soft spot in his heart for Whidbey Island’s Mutiny Bay.

Seth told us that the plan is to open on Sunday but there is no absolute guarantee. There are still a few bugs to work out and he wants everything to be perfect (or close) when the first customers come through the door. From what we could tell last night, things are close to perfect already. You simply MUST try that hamburger! Pair it with a Chuckanut Pilsner and you are in hamburger heaven.
