5-Week Hands-On Experience Plus $2,500 Stipend

SEATTLE — The Pink Boots Society is proud to announce that Ginga Newton has been selected as the recipient of the 2015 Fremont Brewing Company Apprentice Scholarship. Newton is a taproom bartender at Bent Paddle Brewing Company in Duluth, Minn. and also assists in the brewery.

Fremont Brewing in Seattle, WA is partnering with Pink Boots Society to offer a 5-week Apprenticeship in Brewing and Beer Production to a qualified female in the brewing industry. The apprenticeship will take place at Fremont Brewing from February 1st through March 8th, 2015 and will focus on cellar work, the brew house, beer production, lab work, yeast work, QA/QC, sensory analysis, packaging, and an overview of sales and marketing. The “Final Exam” will take place on International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day and will feature Newton leading the brew at Fremont Brewing. Fremont Brewing is also contributing a $2,500 travel and living expenses stipend.

Newton holds a degree in Environmental Sciences with a focus on water quality and habitat restoration, a course of study that provided her with a foundation in chemistry and laboratory analysis. She built a half-barrel home brewing system and has designed her recipes from scratch. Many of them have an herbal component to “give the world something different, something that used to be well received and consumed but has become rare,” said Newton. Those recipes include Yarrow Ale, Labrador Tea Ale and St. Valentine’s Intimacy Lager which utilizes Lady’s Mantle, rose petals and Ceylon cinnamon, among other ingredients.

“We’re excited to work with Ginga and look forward to providing new and challenging experiences for her,” said Matt Lincecum, Founder/Owner of Fremont Brewing Company. “Hats off to Pink Boots for selecting such an impressive candidate to launch this scholarship program!”

Founded in 2008, Fremont Brewing Company is a family-owned craft brewery located in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle.
