Pliny is Coming to Kirkland & He’s Bringing Some Friends

For those of you who (like me) worship the beers of Russian River Brewing, this event is designed with you in mind. As I’ve said ad nauseum, I think Pliny the Younger is a fantastic beer, however I think Russian River makes a lot of other great beers that should not be so easily forsaken. Midst all the hysteria, people often forget that Russian River makes more than Pliny. Although PtY will be involved, the upcoming event at Kirkland’s Trellis Restaurant is about pairing a collection of Russian River beers with dishes created by one of the Seattle area’s great chefs. This is not your typical Pliny-mania event.

On Wednesday, March 21st Trellis Restaurant presents Flights and Bites: an event featuring a number of beers from Russian River Brewing paired with delicious food. Details below. This will not be a full-on beer dinner. Rather, the beer will be paired with a special selection of appetizers.

Chef Brian Scheehser and Trellis Restaurant are quickly earning a reputation for elevating the food and beer pairing experience to new heights. I guess Chef Brian wanted to challenge himself with this one. Either that or he figured the beers are so outstanding it would be easy: people will love anything he serves alongside Supplication.

It must be hard not to over think these things. What exactly do you pair with a sour brown ale aged in Pinot Noir barrels? Exactly what kind of food can stand up to the hop-forward intensity of Pliny the Younger? I don’t know, but I look forward to finding out what Chef Brian has up his sleeve this time. Maybe great beer served with any great food is an inherently great pairing. Maybe you just step aside and let the beer and the food shine on their own.  I doubt it will be that simple, but I am certain it will be delicious. How can it be anything else?

I recently attended an amazing beer and food pairing dinner at Trellis Restaurant in Kirkland. Chef Brian created a five course meal paired with the beers of Hopworks Urban Brewery. I was very happy to be involved with promoting and presenting that event. I am equally happy to tell you about this one.
