Racer X is showing up for Xmas

racer_xAs kids watching Speed Racer, we never knew where or when the mysterious Racer X would show up.  The same is true of Bear Republic Brewing’s  Racer X – Racer 5’s big brother.
Mission Latin Restaurant and Lounge in West Seattle will be tapping a keg of Racer X on Christmas Eve. They’ve been told it is one of five kegs being distributed to Washington this year. If that is indeed true, we would love to know where the other four will be tapped.
Mission might be better known for their margaritas, top-shelf tequila selection, and their kick-ass Latin cuisine, but I can attest that they have a thoughtful selection of draft beer as well. On occasion, their choice of rotating taps has surprised me.  They even have a customer request handle – they take suggestions from their regulars. That’s’ pretty cool
As any Speed Racer fan knows, Racer X is Speed Racer’s (Racer 5’s) big brother. And look out Trixie, it’s a big ‘un. Better keep Spritle and Chim Chim away from this one.
Mission is located in West Seattle, right next door to the Porterhouse. Doubtful they will go through a beer of this stature real quickly. Perhaps that dead week between Christmas and New Years would be a good time to visit the neighborhood the Washington Beer Blog calls home. Especially if you haven’t been to the Porterhouse yet, you could kill two birds with one stone.
Who is getting the other four kegs of Racer X for Christmas this year? Does anyone know?
Here are the Racer X specs:
ABV: 8.9%
IBU: 72
OG: 1.084
Color: Red
Description: Racer X is a bold ale that follows English brewing traditions, but with a California twist. A double IPA with bold hops and a balanced finish, Racer 5’s big brother. There are 5+ pounds of hops per barrel!
2009 California State Fair – SILVER
2009 San Diego International Beer Competition – 2nd
2009 West Coast Beer Fest – GOLD

  1. This just in. Someone posted this on a Beer Advocate forum:
“Friday DEC 18, Bottleworks will be tapping one of the few Bear Republic Racer X kegs (1/6bbl) that the brewery was so gracious to send to Washington. Bottleworks is making day out of it. They will offer hot pricing on all bottles for the day. They will have Hop Rod Rye on draft as well, which you can get a growler to go if you like. The Racer X will be tapped promptly at 5 and will pour until it is gone. First come, first serve. Sorry, no growler sales on that! This is the first time in many years this beer has popped up here, so be sure to get there early to try one of the only kegs to arrive of this killer double IPA. Call Bottleworks with any questions:206.633.2437. Big thanks to Bear Republic!”
