Raising Money for Cancer, Toast a Legend & Celebrate 30 years

A few bits of news to share with you from Dick’s Brewing Company. The brewery announced today that its 3rd Annual Beer for a Cure event raised over $5,500 for the American Cancer Society. The event centers around a homebrewing competition that received over 80 entries this year. The winner, Chris Merritt, will now work with Dick’s Brewing to scale-up his Ruthless Red Ale and brew it on the big system. Expect to see the beer released by the brewery in January and February.

On Saturday, October 19th Dick’s Brewing will host the fourth annual Dick Young Memorial BBQ, For those of you who are new to the game, Dick Young was a larger-than-life character and was something of a legend on the Washington Beer Scene. Simply put, he represented what’s best about his industry – passion, creativity, determination and self-motivation. We lost Dick Young unexpectedly in 2009. Today the brewery bearing his name is operated by his daughter Julie. Proceeds from the Memorial BBQ party benefit Pope’s Kids Place – a very worthy organization that helps give kids a fair shot at life.

And finally, Northwest Sausage & Deli is celebrating its 30th anniversary. They’ll celebrate on October 24th. Complete details about all of these events can be found in the press release below.

Raising money for cancer, a toast to Dick Young and ushering in 30 years of delicious meat

CENTRALIA, WA – On September 21, Dick’s Brewing Company hosted its 3rd Annual Beer for a Cure fundraiser, raising over $5,500 for American Cancer Society. This year the home brew competition received over 80 home brew entries from around the Puget Sound. The brewery celebrated with over 200 guests bidding on silent auction items, entering to win great raffle prizes, dancing the night away to the Chris Guenther Band, and toasting with a Dick’s brew in hand. The first place winner of the home brew competition will work with the Brewers at Dick’s Brewing Company to scale up their winning recipe to be brewed at the brewery. Chris Merritt took home the first place award with his “Ruthless Red”. The Irish Red ale had nice caramel notes, with a smooth sweet finish. Chris’ winning brew will be released at the brewery between January and February of next year. John Johnson came in second place with his Porter, Dean Lennox coming in third place with his Rye, and Rob Horn finished in fourth place with his Milk Stout. We want to give a big thank you to all of our attendees, participants, donors, and volunteers.

Today the Deli keeps Dick’s dream alive by offering a variety of meats smoked right here in our modern electric air smokehouses. Come see what Dick started 30 years ago and enter to win raffle prizes throughout October. The raffle winners will be announced at our open house party on October 24 from 5 – 8 pm. We hope you can join us to toast 30 years of great meat!
