Silver City Brewing’s Saint Florian IPA Raises $14k for Firefighters

Last March we told you about Saint Florian IPA, a then-new beer from Silver City Brewing. Saint Florian is the patron saint of firefighters. The beer was produced to benefit the Washington State Council of Firefighters Benevolent Fund (WSCFF), with a portion of the proceeds dedicated to that worthy cause. Read our original post. Today Silver City Brewing announced that it is about to hand over a check for approximately $14,000.

We all respect and appreciate firefighters. If you don’t, there’s something wrong with you. I’m using kind language. With each sip of Saint Florian IPA, of which I have enjoyed many, I remember the debt of gratitude we all owe the firefighters amongst us. Not too long ago I listened to one of my cousins tell me about a sudden shift in the wind that left him cowering in a fetal position, wrapped in his fire-retarding blanket as a wildfire swept over him. Can you even imagine?

Thank you Silver City for supporting the WSCFF and thank you firefighters everywhere.

Here’s the press release from Silver City Brewing with more details.

Saint Florian, is the patron saint of firefighters and a northwest IPA brewed by Silver City Brewery designed to raise money for Washington State Council of Fire Fighters Benevolent Funds.  Part of the proceeds from each bottle and keg of Saint Florian IPA sold goes directly to the Benevolent Fund where the beer is purchased in the region.  Silver City Brewery owner Scott Houmes said, “We are very proud to grow our long-standing relationship with the Professional Fire Fighters of Kitsap County Benevolent Association. Saint Florian IPA enables us to extend that relationship to other areas around the Puget Sound.”

Silver City Brewery, located in Kitsap County, WA, has helped raise money for the Kitsap Fire Fighters Benevolent Fund every year since 2001 through their annual Oktoberfest Celebration. In that time the Oktoberfest event has raised over $30,000 for the Professional Firefighters of Kitsap County Benevolent Fund.

Owner Scott Houmes was inspired to expand the fundraising reach of Silver City Brewery for WA State Fire Fighters through a commemorative beer offering. Early in 2012 Scott presented the idea to local Kitsap Fire Fighters and asked if they approved and would help in naming the beer. Saint Florian, the patron saint of Fire Fighters, came back as the obvious choice.

Of this Kitsap Local Fire Fighter Benevolent Fund President, Brian Danskin had this to say “The benevolent fund was established years ago to assist our own members in times of tragedy.  Our members put their lives on the line for others every day and are happy to assist others when tragedy strikes them.  This fund allows our members some support when the rescuer needs rescuing.  We have evolved this fund into a 501c3 so that we can help those in the community and across the State in times of need.  Silver City Brewery has single handedly made this dream a reality with their support to our Fund.  We are fortunate to have this type of commitment and support from Silver City Brewery and are excited to see where this new partnership will take us.” Saint Florian IPA is now able to help the Fund for the entire state.

Saint Florian IPA raises funds wherever it is sold in Washington. Of this Brewmaster Don Spencer said “We are very honored to present Saint Florian IPA, not only as a great IPA, but as way to help raise funds for the Benevolent Fund around the Puget Sound. We hope it will also help raise awareness about the Benevolent Fund, as well as the story of Saint Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.”
