by Kendall Jones, washingtonbeerblog.com
Okay, maybe you have been to this one, but last year was my first time and I was totally blown away. Until last year, I had never even heard about this festival and it is awesome.

This Saturday the Porterhouse Pub in Mount Vernon will celebrate its 8th Annual Porterhouse Charity Brewfest to benefit the historic Lincoln Theater. The event features great craft beer and world-class music, mostly blues. They shut down the entire street in front of the Porterhouse and put on one helluva show.

Last year, this was a great event. In fact, I was surprised that I had never heard about it. Kind of freaked me out, actually. I mean, great beer and great music? What’s not to love? Below, you’ll find all the details for this years festival.

Here’s our video from last year’s festival.

Here are all the details from the Porterhouse website.

2:00 pm Saturday August 14th between 1st and Main On Gates Street will be shut down and set up for great brews, raffle prizes, live bands, and dancing to raise funds for the Lincoln Theatre. Breweries from the north west region and the west coast will be bringing their best craft beers for your enjoyment along with some great local music.

This years musical lineup includes:

The Bill Mattocks Band, high energy first rate contemporary blues and blues-based rock.

Tim Halpin and the Better Half, “Funk-infused Rock-N-Roll” style

and last but not least

The Red Hot Blues Sisters, internationally recognized Blues/folk sound

Tickets can be purchased at the Pub or Lincoln Theatre for
$20 in advance, or $24 @ the gates.

Each ticket provides 5 (4oz.) Pours and entrance to the festivities. Please remember this event is strictly 21 and over.

All proceeds will go to help keep the Lincoln Theatre a cornerstone of local culture and history. So come down and celebrate summer with us for a noble cause with craft brews, great music, and good times!

by Kendall Jones, washingtonbeerblog.com
We like this trend. It’s anniversary season. Coming up this weekend there are two anniversary parties for you to consider.

Friday, August 13th – The Porterhouse Pub in West Seattle will commemorate its first anniversary with a celebration that includes one of the first tappings of Lottie’s Seattle Lager from Emerald City Beer Company, door prizes, and special beer selections like a cask of Georgetown’s Lucille IPA and a special dry-hopped version of Fremont Brewing’s IPA. Many other surprises.

Saturday, August 14th – The Red Hot in Tacoma will celebrate its third anniversary with a celebration that includes a lot of beer. They’re setting up a special beer garden out back and will have a total of 22 beers on tap.

Here’s what the Red Hot’s blog had to say about the upcoming event:

This Saturday, August 14th, we’re gettin’ together with all our pals to celebrate 3 years of The Red Hot being around. Beer Garden, hard to find beers, easy to find beers (26 on tap, 13 inside and 13 outside), canned beers, hot dogs, sausages, great weather, giveaways, and good times.

We’ll be tapping some 2009 Deschutes Abyss, Firestone Walker Parabola Stout & Double Jack IPA, Port Townsend Green Tea Golden, Silver City Whoop Pass IIPA, Ommegang Zuur, Black Raven Wisdom Seeker, Walking Man Runaway IPA, Human Blockhead Tough as Nails Lager, Double Mountain Som O Dat & Vaporizer, Schooner Exact Seamstress Union, a special Cherry Belgian Gold blend from our pals at Hales…you get the point.

Beer Garden opens at 1pm, goes til 11pm. 21 and over as always, no jerks allowed.

by Kendall Jones, washingtonbeerblog.com
A beer-battered Monte Cristo sandwich? Shut the front door!

Tomorrow’s Master Brewers Brunch at the Porterhouse (Friday, May 21st) should be a good one. In attendance will be rockstars from the brewing world, such as John Harris of Full Sail Brewing and Steve Wagner of Stone Brewing. Local heroes like Drew Cluly (Pike), Pat Ringe (Diamond Knot) and Dave Buhler (Elysian) will also be in attendance. Rounding out the list of “for sure” guests is Jamie Floyd of Ninkasi Brewing. Rumors abound, but you can bet that this event will attract other great brewers from near and far. There are a lot of important people in town this week. Duh.

Like the brewers, the beers that will be poured include some certainties and some surprises. For sure, expect to see Full Sail’s Spotless IPA, Stone’s Russian Imperial Stout, Pike’s Double IPA, Elysian’s Dry-Hopped Immortal IPA, Diamond Knot’s ESB, and Ninkasi’s the Kraken.

Things get rolling at 10:00 a.m. and the food and beer will last until it is all gone. We just got a sneak peek at the food menu. Now you get the same.

Quiche Lorraine served with assorted fresh fruit.

Omlette Denver Style (ham, greem pepper, onion and cheddar) served with hashbrowns and choice of toast.

Fresh crepes. Your choice of sweet with fresh strawberry and marscapone or savory with chicken and provalone.

Porterhouse Portobello Pile – Roasted mushrooms, green onions and tomato with two eggs your style and your choice of cheese, served with your choice and toast.

Beer Battered Monte Cristo with fresh organic raspberry coulis.

Smoked Salmon Benedict, fresh house-made hollandaise and love. Served with hashbrowns.

by Kendall Jones, washingtonbeerblog.com
Happening tonight – Big Al brewers night at Porterhouse. The crew from Big Al Brewing will be at Porterhouse Pub in West Seattle. Pliny the Younger, on the other hand, will not.

It’s a Tuesday night. Not usually a busy night on the beer scene; however, the much ballyhoed arrival of Pliny the Younger is upon us. This is wacko. We can’t complain. I guess we started the hysteria when we published the story back on Jan. 15th, hinting that some of the much-coveted triple IPA was bound for Seattle. Apparently Plinymania is now fully upon us.

Last Friday Collins Pub blew through a 1/6 barrel in 20 minutes. Oh well, we missed it. We were going to announce that tonight Naked City will be tapping a keg, and that you should go out and try some, but you can scratch that. Naked City tapped their Pliny the Younger at 5:00 p.m. today. Drained it in 6 minutes.

So we’ll be heading up to the Porterhouse in West Seattle to join Big Al Brewing for a brewers night celebration. Sure, maybe it isn’t quite as sexy as a big uber IPA from California, but we love Big Al and, well, is that so wrong?

If you’re heartbroken because you just cannot keep up with the Pliny fever, come join us and Big Al at the Porterhouse. They’ll have plenty of beer, I promise.

It sounds a bit funny, I know, but the event supports West Seattle Helpline – an organization that provides all kinds of services to people in need. One of those needs is socks and underwear for kids.

The event will include all the normal brewers night fun – swag and great beer. There will also be live music from The Head and The Heart. You are encouraged to contribute new sock, new underwear or cash money to help support the cause.

The event gets underwear (underway) at 6:00 p.m.

by Kendall Jones, washingtonbeerblog.com
The Porterhouse in West Seattle opened in August, as we reported here. Since that time, they have been settling in and working out all the bugs (though we haven’t seen any bugs at all). This coming Tuesday (Oct. 20th, 7:00 pm) the Porterhouse will host its first brewers night celebration. And what better way to do it than to invite Mukilteo’s Diamond Knot Brewery, which just so happens to be celebrating its 15th anniversary this month?

Congratulations to the Porterhouse on hosting its first brewers night. Congratulations to Diamond Knot for 15 years of outstanding beers.

In addition to being a typical brewers night, this event will also feature the introduction of Diamond Knot Ho! Ho!, their winter seasonal. The Porterhouse is located at 2329 California Ave SW, Seattle (map).

The wife and I were wondering aloud recently about exactly when good old fashioned IPA started to turn the corner and become the hop monsters that we now so fondly appreciate. One must remember, there was a time when 75 IBUs was unusual. Practically unheard of. If you were around the beer scene back in the 80′s and 90′s, then you now what I’m talking about. At some point, for each of us, a locally-brewed beer came along that made you say, “Hot damn! Now that’s a hoppy beer!”

Diamond Knot is the one I remember. There was a time when the Diamond Knot booth was the first one I’d hunt down at every brew festival. Sure, there may have been other brewers making beers that, at the time, seemed to be ridiculously over-hopped, but DK is the first one I remember.

As an undergrad, I recall a philosophy professor saying that anybody can come up with radical ideas, but great philosophers introduce the world to radical ideas that are eventually considered normal.

As Diamond Knot winds up their 15th Anniversary celebration week, we’d just like to say thank you. Not only for the IPA, the Industrial XIPA, and the Shipwreck XXXIPA, but also for all of their other great beers. Personally, I’m a big fan of the Possession Porter. Among other tasty DK treats, I’m looking forward to drinking a Diamond Knot Ho Ho next week at the Porterhouse.
