Dick Young, the man behind the Danger.

Third Annual Dick Young Memorial BBQ

Today I want to tell you about an upcoming event: the Third Annual Dick Young Memorial BBQ, which takes place at Dick’s Brewing in Centralia this Saturday, October 20. But first, some perspective.

We probably cranked Nirvana on the stereo as we drove to the festival. My hair was down to my ass. Literally, down to my ass. The Washington Brewers Festival, or whatever they called it back then, was an intimate affair at the old Herb Farm in Fall City. That is when I first met the founder of Dick’s Brewing Company. Dick Young made an indelible impression on me and pretty much everyone else he ever met. When he passed away unexpectedly in 2009, the Washington beer scene lost a gem. He was one of a kind. And that kind was awesome. Dick’s daughter, Julie Young-McGregor now pilots the company that her father started building back in 1992.

Forgive me, but I have to do this. It is my way of honoring Dick.  Let’s all get it right. The flagship beer from Dick’s Brewing is called Dick Danger Ale. It is not called Dick’s Danger. Dick Young’s nickname was Dick Danger. He was a man’s man: a boater, a butcher, a smoker-of-meats. He was adventurous: a Harley rider, a scuba diver, and avid ski junkie. He was Dick Danger. The beer is called Dick Danger Ale. When you call it anything else, you are disrespecting a legend.

Here is the press release I received from Julie today:

Dick’s Brewing Company to Host 3rd Annual Dick Young Memorial BBQ to Benefit Pope’s Kids Place

CENTRALIA, WA – Three years ago on October 25, 2009 we lost a father, a grandfather, a friend, a boss, an entrepreneur, a son, a teacher and some good jokes. Dick Young left us too soon but left a legacy which lives on in the Centralia community under Dick’s daughter Julie Young and the Dick’s Brew Crew.

Dick’s Brewing Company will be hosting their 3rd Annual Dick Young Memorial BBQ on Saturday, October 20, 2012 from 3 pm – 8 pm. The annual fundraiser is a toast to Dick and his support to Pope’s Kids Place, a non-profit organization in Centralia that provides dental, medical, respite and preschool services for children. Dick’s Brewery will be open to the general public, must be 21 years or older, and a portion of the proceeds will go to Pope’s Kids Place. The Brewery will be welcoming the Backfire Band and serving pulled pork sandwiches and sides for $15.

So come, raise a pint of Dick Danger Ale in memory of Dick, and help celebrate a “brew”tiful life!
