Up in Bellingham, Chuckanut Brewery is smokin’!

In a region where big, uber-hoppy ales reign supreme, Chuckanut Brewery has distinguished itself by making world-class lagers. Sure they make some ales, but it’s the lagers that have set them apart.

In September, Washington’s craft brewers brought home seven medals from the 2010 Great American Beer Festival (read our post). Of those seven medals, two of them hang in Bellingham at the Chuckanut Brewery–a gold for the Vienna Lager and a bronze for the Pilsner. Back in 2009, Chuckanut made their first trip to the GABF and brought home a whopping four medals along with the titles of America’s Best Small Brew Pub and Best Small Brewer.

Still, when I say that Chuckanut is smokin’, I’m talking about more than their success at GABF and other competitions and festivals. Today we learn that Chuckanut is about to release its Rauch Bier. Brewing a Rauch Bier is tricky business. There’s a balancing act involved and many brewers fall off the beam into the smokey abyss. Will Kemper, the Brewmaster at Chuckanut, is surely up to the task. He hasn’t missed the mark yet.

Here’s the word from Chuckanut Brewery:

Chuckanut Rauch Bier is scheduled to be released the week of October 10. With it’s delicate combination of malts from the town in Germany famous for its smoked beers, Bamberg, this beer is not to be missed. It pairs well with almost any food and its full body is perfect in our fall weather. Modeled after the Spezial Brewery rauch in Bamberg this lager is rarely brewed in Washington state. Chuckanut Rauch is an amber colored beer with quietly intense smokiness backed by malt in the nose. Plato 13, ABV 4.8, and IBU’s 20 makes this a good drinking beer.
