A Visit to Westport Brewing Company, One of WA’s Newest Breweries

Every year we participate in the Washington CoastSavers Beach Cleanup. The event takes place each year on a Saturday around Earth Day. In other words, we spent last weekend at the beach. Spending some time walking the tidelines and the dunes collecting bags of garbage is its own reward; however, this year our annual trip to the Washington coast provided an opportunity to visit a new brewery. Bonus!  Westport Brewing Company began brewing in December of last year and opened its taproom on January 1, 2012 (as we reported here).

Mark Wagner is an accomplished home brewer with many awards to his credit. He is also a scholar—a cellular biologist. I’m not talking about some lab technician processing blood samples; he’s an academic. He has been published. Now he is a professional brewer.

I was particularly fond of the Cohasset Cream Ale and the Neptune’s Imperial IPA. Kim liked the Horizontal Premium Pilsner.

If you’re a seasoned beer adventurer, you will notice some familiar things when you visit Westport Brewing. The tasting bar is in the brewery. You’ll see bags of grain and lots of stainless steel. Beer is available in tasters, pints and growlers to go. There is a lovely beer garden out back. None of those things are unusual and can be found at many other breweries like Westport Brewing. What might pique your curiosity are the plastic fermenters.

Fermenting in plastic instead of stainless steel is something you should discuss with Mark. Like I said, he’s a scientist, a scholar and a published academic. He’s working on something very interesting. A lot of brewers experiment but few of them adhere to the scientific method when they do it. Even fewer have interest in publishing papers about the outcome.

Westport Brewing Company is now self-distributing beer to Seattle and surrounding areas. Look for it at better beer bars around town. I know the Beveridge Place Pub (blog sponsor) recently poured it. We expect to see it soon at the Beer Junction (blog sponsor). Keep an eye on the Westport Brewing Facebook page. Better yet, make the drive the Westport. Spend some time at the beach. Visit the brewery or find it on tap around town.

I hope Westport can get some temperature control in their brewhouse. So far, all of the beers tasted featured serious off flavors and funky phenols. Best wishes to Mark and his company!
