Von Trapp’s Gets a New Name: Rhein Haus

James Weimann and Deming Maclise are no dummies. When they opened Von Trapp’s on Capitol Hill back in February of 2013, it was not their first rodeo. The two business partners are also responsible for such Seattle destinations as Bastille, Poquito’s, and Stoneburner and therefore know a thing or two about the business of opening a restaurant and drinkery. That’s why they trademarked the name Von Trapp’s before they opened.

Still, confusion with the Von Trapp family of The Sound of Music fame persisted. Therefore, Weimann and Maclise have graciously decided to change the name of the wildly popular Capitol Hill beer hall. Effective immediately, the establishment formerly known as Von Trapp’s is Rhein Haus.

Here is the official press release (updated on August 15th):

SEATTLE, August 14, 2014 — Seattle’s uber-popular Capitol Hill bier hall is changing its name from Von Trapp’s to Rhein Haus, effective today.

Though the owners vetted the original name and got the federal trademark before opening in early 2013, over the past few months concern has arisen with one member of the Trapp family about confusion between the Seattle Von Trapp’s and the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont.

As Von Trapp’s continues to receive national attention, including recently being named one of Zagat’s Top 10 New Biergartens as well as being featured on NBC and the Cooking Channel, they felt it was right to respect the request and change the name. After much deliberation they decided on Rhein Haus, as homage to the longest river in Germany.

“The support and attention Von Trapp’s receives has been an unexpected surprise and blessing,” says owner Deming Maclise.

“And we all feel that in order to differentiate ourselves from the Trapp family, a name change is best for everyone involved,” adds owner, James Weimann.

Though the sign outside will change, everything else will remain the same. Same gorgeous interior, same continually rotating selection of 24 draft beers, same great housemade sausages, pretzels, and mustards from chef Pete Fjosne—same Bavarian-style good times to be had. Deming Maclise, James Weimann, Rich Fox, and Dustin Watson remain the owners and they look forward to welcoming guests to the newly christened Rhein Haus!

Opened in February of 2013, Rhein Haus (formerly Von Trapp’s) is Capitol Hill’s very own 10,000 square-foot slice of Bavaria. Owners Deming Maclise and James Weimann filled the renovated 1940’s candy factory with burly bier hall antiques from across Europe to create a genuine feel and an outstanding space. Authentic Bavarian fare—house-made sausages and pretzels—are accompanied by 24 drafts featuring both European and Northwestern beers. In addition to the main dining room, an 80-seat bier hall, 53 bar seats, an intimate fire den, and two mezzanines encircle the five indoor bocce ball courts. An outdoor biergarten offers sunny seating and an additional bocce court, as well as another bar. Rhein Haus opens Monday through Friday at 3pm; Saturdays and Sundays at 10am for brunch. Dinner is served from 5pm to 11pm, and a late night menu is offered from 11pm to 1am. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 4pm to 6pm and weekends from 3pm to 5pm. Bocce ball courts are available to rent by the hour and in conjunction with event space rentals. Rhein Haus is located at 912 12th Avenue in Seattle, Washington.
