This Sunday (March 17) is Saint Patrick’s Day. This fact is not lost many of our local breweries and other beer establishments. Since Sunday is a holy day and Saturday is a play day, most people will celebrate on Saturday the 16th this year. Heck, some will celebrate all weekend, starting on Friday. Some of our local breweries and beer bars have events planned to celebrate the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Uh, I mean, to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. What I know of these events, I list below. If you know of more, please leave comments.
Saint Patrick’s Day isn’t the only thing happening this weekend. The big Penumbra Beer Bash takes place in Seattle on Saturday. Last I heard, tickets were selling at a breakneck pace, so you should get on that right away. For more information, read my previous post about Penumbra or read the story I wrote for The Stranger.
The celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day was originally rooted in religious and ethnic tradition and to a certain extent the Irish still observe those traditions. They go to church and have a feast with the family. In America, Saint Patrick’s Day is a simplified, commercialized celebration of Irishness: the history and culture of the Emerald Isle reduced to shamrocks, leprechauns and green beer. It would be disgusting if we meant any disrespect, but we don’t. We’re just looking for an excuse to party. Basically, Saint Patrick’s Day is an excuse to drink beer. (As if I need another one of those.)

In Kent, Airways Brewing (blog sponsor) will be serving up traditional Irish fare at the Bistro. Kind of. The menu will include corned beef tacos; vegetarian Guinness stew; pretzels with curried Sky Hag mustard, onion marmalade, and rarebit; and Jameson pecan pie. To wash it down, They will have a Randall of our Chocolate Stout run through mint, plus more dark beers on tap. 12:00 – 10:00 pm. Grownups only (21+). Not at the brewery, but in downtown Kent at the Airways Beer & Bistro.

The Beer Junction
In West Seattle, The Beer Junction (blog sponsor) will introduce Rocky the Randle on Friday at 5:00. They will also be serving Iron Horse Irish Death Milkshakes with Husky Deli Ice Cream!
Foggy Noggin
Not exactly a Saint Patrick’s Day event, but Foggy Noggin will be celebrating its anniversary on Saturday. Read our previous post about that event.
Boundary Bay Brewing
The city of Bellingham celebrates with a Saint Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday. It just so happens that the parade route ends the Boundary Bay brewpub. Live music in the beer garden and the pub, Irish dancers, and lots of fun. We were there a couple years ago. Check out our post. Chuckanut Brewery and Kitchen
Also in Bellingham, Chuckanut Brewery & Kitchen also plans to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day over the course of two days this year. The Chuckanut Kitchen has already started the new Irish-inspired Locavore menu featuring Corned Beef & Cabbage plus a delicious Irish Stout Stew. For dessert there’s an Irish Cream Crème Brulee and a Chocolate Stout Brownie with a chocolate Stout genache. Entertainment will start with Puirt Na Gael, a group of musicians playing Celtic and Irish music on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, live Irish music starts at 4:00 pm with duo James X 2 followed by quartet Ask Sophie at 7:00 pm. Of course there’s always the chance the bag pipe players will stop in on either day for some rousing bag piping!
Parkway Tavern in Tacoma
Celebrate Saint Pant’s Day at The Parkway Tavern in Tacoma. This is a pants drive and a beer bash. Read our previous post for details. This is a very cool idea. People forget about pants, especially when they’ve been drinking on Saint Patrick’s Day.
White Bluffs Brewing
Over the mountains in Richland, White Bluffs Brewing has put together a special menu for Saint Patrick’s Day. Corned beef and cabbage, Reuben sandwiches, shepherds pie, and more. All of this accompanied by their delicious beers.
Puyallup River Alehouse
Puyallup River Alehouse all weekend. Friday thru Sunday they will offer Imperial Pint specials (you keep the glass!) of Guinness, Harp, and Smithwicks. They will also have Dick’s Irish, Diamond Knot Slane’s Irish, Chuckanut Green Kolsch, Iron Horse Irish Death, and a special dry stout from Puyallup River Brewing! Eric likes to make Black & Tans… but Eric LOVES to make BlackHops! (Guinness & IPA). Also have a bunch of cool St. Paddy’s swag to raffle off.
Harmon Brewing (Tap Room)
They will celebrate all weekend long. For complete details visit them on Facebook. Highlights include special Irish-themed menu items and live music. They will have a heated beer garden (tent) set up outside. The drums and pipes happen on Sunday night.
