Whitewall Brewing Company opens in Marysville this Saturday, March 1st at 1:00 p.m. We were fortunate enough to get in for a sneak peek last weekend. We met with the owners, sampled the beers, and took some pictures, which we share below.
Sean Wallner and Aaron Wight were both members of the same homebrew club in Snohomish County – the Stilly Mashers. The original idea to open a brewery was Sean’s. He knew he couldn’t go it alone and still keep his day job, so he approached Aaron as a potential business partner. The brewery’s name is a play on the combination of their last names. As we’ve come to expect in the beer biz, Sean and Aaron seem like really nice guys. They have a good plan for moving forward and also seem to be realistic in their expectations.
The beers are solid. I was especially fond of the Brown Ale and the IPA. Unlike so many other breweries who think the “I” in IPA stands for Inebriation, Whitewall’s IPA clocks in at a modest 5.2 percent ABV, so it is very close to being a session IPA. It is balanced, quaffable and has a pleasant lingering bitterness. Sean and Aaron are brewing on a two-barrel system and therefore qualify as a nano-brewery. They already scored some oak barrels and intend to start some sour beer projects soon.
In addition to beer by the pint and the growler, Whitewall Brewing says that they are working on providing some sort of catered food for the Grand Opening event. They’re talking with a local BBQ’er and will provide that information as soon as things are solidified (stay tuned to the Facebook page). Moving forward, since Whitewall is not a food establishment, they welcome you to bring your own food. They’ll also have menus for local restaurants.

[singlepic id=216 w=350 h= float=right]The location at 14524 Smokey Point Blvd is easy to find – not hidden back in a business park and has obvious signage visible from the road. The taproom is large and comfortable, with some repurposed electrical spools for tables and a couple of couches. The bar itself is a monument to how these guys built the brewery. They gathered up their pennies and put it all together out of pocket. The bar top is literally made of pennies.
According to the Whitewall Brewing Facebook page, “We are focused on producing quality craft ales and lagers. We will have ten taps that will feature a core set of beer we produce, as well as seasonal ales/lagers. We plan to also have root beer on tap for those with family members under the legal drinking age. We will be family friendly. Kids are welcome. Customers are encouraged to bring lunch and/or dinner with them to enjoy your food with our quality beer. We will also have menus of local establishments that will deliver to the brewery.”
